Ask your documents

Open a PDF, Markdown or text file. It is read, split into passages and indexed in this browser; then ask questions in any language. The file never leaves your device.

Written answers come from an on-device model that writes in English, so open documents written in English. You can still ask your questions in any language.

Under the hood
  1. The text is extracted in the browser (pdf.js for PDF files), split into passages of a few sentences and turned into fingerprints of their meaning. The index is kept in this browser, so reopening the same file is instant.
  2. Your question gets a fingerprint too; the closest passages are shown and highlighted on the page.
  3. If this browser has a built-in language model (Chrome’s Prompt API), it writes an answer using only those passages, with numbered citations. Otherwise you get the sentences that answer best, picked by meaning.
